Studying and Working at Moran Aged Care – Makala

Moran Health Care Group’s vision is to create teams who feel proud and rewarded for their work.  For some Moran employees, experience in aged care starts when they are students and develops into a lifelong love of caring for our elderly residents.  We recently spoke to Makala O’Neill, a student nurse from the University of Wollongong and part-time Moran Carer.

Makala is 19 years old and is studying for a Diploma of Nursing.  To start off her experience at Moran Aged Care she began working casually in reception, meeting and greeting families, helping with COVID testing and providing administration support.  Four months later she transitioned to a permanent part-time job as a carer, working 25 hours a week.  She will qualify as an Enrolled Nurse in 2023 and then continue her studies to qualify as a Registered Nurse in 2025.

Makala finds her work complements her university studies by teaching her new skills and giving her a deeper understanding of the profession.  Her flexible roster arrangements provide an improved work life balance.  Working close to home with public transport and easy parking nearby is an added bonus.

But would Makala recommend working in Aged Care to others?

“It is a great experience and you build your confidence really quickly.  The residents are lovely and working as part of the team is very rewarding.  Moran Engadine is nice and clean and modern, a good place to be a carer” she said
